Miki's Donation

"Miki started to think about donating her hair a while ago when she heard about it and since then she tried to grow her hair as long as possible. She knows how hard it is to lose one's hair through chemotherapy, as her little sister had gone through it 6 years ago when she got leukemia.

Sonya and Fei Ling's Donation

"Sonya loves her long hair and would not cut her hair short. Though I have always trim it to keep it tidy and manageable.

Zhong Hou's Donation

"When I was in high school, one of my batch-mates had a kind of disease and gradually lost her hair in two months time. Although in the end she was cured and her hair had grown back, I still can feel her anxiety and depression at that time.

Henrietta's Second Donation

"I was inspired by a friend of mine to donate my hair, after I learned that she had done it. I was about to send my hair overseas but a Google search led me to discover that Singapore actually has its own hair donation initiative! That was back in 2013.

Edna's second Donation

"Just before I started Primary One in 2013, Mum sent me for a hair cut. I had not cut my hair since I was 3, and Mum wanted me to learn to take care of my own hair. Mum felt that I could do a good deed at the same time by donating my hair to be made into wigs for cancer patients.

Know more about hair - why we reject

Few months back, we rejected one donation, probably one of the best ponytails we have ever received.

Reason; we found a couple of strands of hair caught in the opposite direction.

Many of you would asked, why can’t we just remove what we found? We could, but what about those we missed?

We have found a video that could relate to what we are talking here.
Watch from 0:38 to 1:30 (what is remy hair).

We hope that after watching this clip, donors would understand why some donations were rejected.

As it takes at least three or more donors’ hair and about SGD200 to make a wig, we cannot afford to let it (the wig) mat and tangle just after second or third wash.

Samyukta's Donation

Eight years ago, in 2007, when I was eleven years old, I was amazed when I heard that Sunita Williams, an American astronaut, ran the Boston marathon on a treadmill in space. I followed her story and was even more inspired when I learnt that she had cut and donated her hair from space to help make a wig for cancer patients who lost hair during the chemotherapy.

Minh Chau's donation

"I actually have long hair for my whole 30 years life. It is a blessing for me to have such a beautiful one. It makes me feel happy and confident everyday.

Melissa's Donation

"I've been in and out of infusion centers since 2008 when I was diagnosed with a Lupus and a blood clotting disorder. I'm at the National Cancer Centre of Singapore about every two weeks for a blood draw. I see so many cancer patients who have lost their hair to chemo, and it makes me feel good to know that I can do something to help.

Louicia's Donation

"I was inspired by my mother's friend who had also donated her hair to a different organisation a few years ago. Thus, I decided to do the same because I wanted to make use of my hair to support others who are not as fortunate.

“Our prime purpose in life is to help others” –Dalai Lama

"I salute the creator(s) of Recycle Your Hair, for giving Singaporeans the chance to help others in need. Your generosity and dedication is amazing.

Iris's Donation

I attempted several times to donate my ponytails since I was about 12 years old. Back in the age of dial-up Internet when information was not as freely available, it was difficult finding agencies accepting hair donations. Moreover, the results turned out to be in faraway countries such as America. Having held on to my ponytails for the longest time, I finally threw them away many years later.

Special Discount

The wig maker had given us a special discount for the 4 wigs we made earlier this year, from $200 to $180. This is to match the price they quoted Tan Tock Seng Hospital for the wigs they made from their hair donation drive. However, we are not sure how long this offer will last.

Total refunded amount is $80 from the 4 wigs. Respective sponsors have been informed. However, they are more willing to use the refund to sponsor more wigs.

Therefore, with approval from our sponsors, we have used the money to subsidise the making of wig Y15-04, instead of holding on to the money.

Adjustment has been made accordingly.

Wigs Update 01/09/2015

Apologies for the delay on the update of the wigs.

Earlier, we made 4 wigs, including a specially requested wig. We have recently made an additional wig (Y15-05), making the total number of wigs we made this year to 5.

On the 28th July 2015, we donated 4 wigs (see photos below) to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Thank you Hui Shan (our hair donor) for taking your time to come down with us.

Surprising move?

Hair donations from shavees of the hair shaving event have started coming in. Surprisingly, most of them have more than one ponytail.

Previously, the event only allowed one ponytail at the main event, hence some were not able to donate their hair due to the restriction.

We were told that the event are allowing more ponytails this year, however, some were still being asked to reduce the number of ponytail to only one. We had no idea what was going on, therefore we could not answer this question when we were being asked by shavees.

Another question we are often being asked was, why can't we work with the event so that they will not direct shavees, who wish to donate their hair, to overseas organisations. Again, we are not able to answer this question.

Maria's Donation

"When I was in grade 3, which was 5 years ago, a girl in grade 5 cut her hair off in order to donate it. However, her hair was too short and it went all to waste. Ever since then I felt like I had to fulfill it and make a donation which wouldn't go to waste.

"I was thinking to get myself a birthday present for my 22th birthday, be it having a new image or doing something meaningful instead of buying luxury goods or throwing myself a grand party. I was having waist length hair and I decided to cut it.

Yi Ling's Donation

"I kept my hair long for the first time, for my wedding last June. I decided to cut it this May, just when a friend introduced me to Recycle Your Hair, so I was happy to know I cut it for a good cause."
